What Is the TEF?
The TEF (Test d'Évaluation de Français) is an internationally recognized exam that measures your proficiency in French. Accepted by the French Ministry of the Interior and by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC), the TEF is essential for any francophone immigration project.
TEF Test Sections
The TEF consists of five sections: listening comprehension (40 min), reading comprehension (60 min), oral expression (15 min), written expression (60 min) and vocabulary/structure (30 min). Each section assesses skills aligned with the CEFR levels, from A1 to C2.
What Score Should You Aim For?
For a resident card in France, B1 level is generally required. For naturalization, B1 oral level is mandatory. Candidates for Canadian immigration typically need B2 or higher depending on their chosen program.
Preparation Tips
Start preparing at least two months before the exam. Familiarize yourself with the test format by taking practice exams. Work on your listening skills with French podcasts. For written expression, practice writing structured argumentative essays.
