OEPRE and OFII: The Official Pathway
For signatories of the Republican Integration Contract, OFII funds language training hours based on the level assessed on arrival. Beyond that, the OEPRE program (Opening Schools to Parents for Children's Success) offers free classes to parents of pupils in certain schools. These schemes are free, structured and often the first true entry point to real linguistic progress.
Associations and Volunteers
Many associations offer free or very low-cost French classes: Cours Municipaux d'Adultes, structures such as Secours Catholique, France Terre d'Asile, Singa, or municipal libraries. These sessions are often delivered by trained volunteers. They offer great flexibility, sometimes mid-year. Quality depends on the teacher and context — it pays to try two or three structures to find the right fit.
France Travail, CPF and Regional Schemes
If you are registered with France Travail (former Pôle emploi), language training can be funded as part of your career project. The Compte Personnel de Formation (CPF) can fund TCF, TEF or DELF preparation with Qualiopi-certified providers. Many regions and departmental councils add to these schemes. These paths are often free for the beneficiary, in exchange for attendance commitments.
Online and Self-Learning
Several platforms offer high-quality free content: TV5MONDE, RFI Savoirs, Le Point du FLE, Bonjour de France. For immigration paperwork, France Éducation international publishes official TCF example tests. Combining these resources with a weekly in-person session is often the most effective formula: density via digital, consolidation of speaking in person. Sylum's positioning test helps you decide where to focus.
