The Regulatory Framework
Since 2016, French proficiency has been mandatory for certain residence permits and naturalization. Levels are defined according to the CEFR (A1 to C2).
Multi-Year Residence Permit: A2 Level
A2 level in both speaking and writing is required for the multi-year residence card after an initial one-year permit. This means being able to communicate in everyday situations.
Resident Card: B1 Level
The 10-year resident card requires B1 level: understanding the main points of a discussion, managing most daily situations, and producing coherent speech.
Naturalization: Confirmed B1 Oral Level
B1 oral level is verified during the assimilation interview at the prefecture. Prove it with a DELF B1+ diploma or a TEF/TCF test taken within the last 2 years. Holders of a French higher education diploma are exempt.
