A Discretionary Path
Naturalization by decree is a favor granted by the State, not an automatic right. It targets adult foreigners who wish to become French after several years of legal residence. The administration assesses the entire journey: integration, conduct, resources, family and professional ties.
Residence Conditions
A minimum length of legal residence in France is required, generally five years. This duration can be reduced in certain cases (higher studies in France, services rendered, spouse of a French citizen under specific conditions). The residence must be effective and stable: the administration checks that France is truly the applicant's center of interests.
Other Requirements
Beyond the duration, you must demonstrate sufficient French language skills (usually proven by a test), knowledge of French history and culture, stable resources, a compatible criminal record, and no situation of polygamy. A commitment to respect the essential principles and values of the Republic is required.
Submitting the File
The application is prepared and submitted online via the dedicated platform. It includes many documents: civil status, proof of residence, payslips, tax notices, French language certificate, criminal record. Completeness is essential. Processing is long and generally includes an assimilation interview.
