Why a French Account Is Essential
Many tasks in France go through a local bank account: salary, rent, direct debits, subscriptions, benefits. Without a French account, paying online or receiving a salary becomes difficult. Opening an account is therefore one of the very first steps after arriving.
Traditional vs Online Banks
Traditional banks offer in-person support, useful for complex steps (loans, guarantees), but generally ask for more documents and rarely accept non-residents. Online banks and neobanks are faster and accessible with few documents, though they offer less personalized advice.
Required Documents
Prepare: a valid ID (passport, residence permit), a recent proof of address (utility bill, lease, host attestation), proof of activity or income. An IBAN from another country may be requested for initial transfers. Without a proof of address, some neobanks remain open to applicants.
The Right to a Bank Account
If banks systematically refuse, the Banque de France can assign an institution that is legally required to open a basic account: this is the 'droit au compte'. It guarantees access to essential banking services. It is activated upon request, with proof of refusal, and unlocks otherwise blocked situations.
